Bingo is traditionally known as a female pastime, but not always. Many men also enjoy the online game and they certainly should do in the format of the brand new app from the BBC. As people sway to the Internet for entertainment, and away from their television screens, broadcasters are having to think of more interactive ways to keep them, and this Top Gear Bingo game from the BBC looks like a lot of fun.

Top Gear Bingo is nothing like the online games you see at sites such as Ladbrokes Bingo or Mecca Bingo and there are no numbers involved. Free to play and just for fun, Monterosa have developed the new app for the BBC, which allows players to mark things off as they see them on the show.

The bingo squares are full of cars, well-known phrases from the show and prompts and views are invited to mark things off as they appear on the screen. The app is accessible from the BBC website and via Facebook and it’s likely to make watching Top Gear a lot more fun.

Seeing the bingo game disseminated in this way isn’t new, in fact the BBC seem to have taken inspiration from many ‘memes’ seen around the Internet where famous televisions shows and movies are pulled up for their clichéd scenes and catchphrases via a bingo style game. However, this is the first time a television show has embraced the idea and launched an official product.

We don’t think the online bingo sites need to worry, this is anything but competition, but we are likely to see copycat apps for other shows. The trend just goes to show how hard television companies have to work to keep viewers, in a world where people are increasingly turning to more interactive forms of entertainment.
