Mecca Bingo Background And History

Islingtons only bingo hall, Mecca closed in March 2007 as owners Rank were worried that the smoking ban would cause a drop in attendance at bingo sessions. This had a knock on effect on passing trade for local shops, which just goes to show that when a bingo hall closes, there are often more losers than just the employees and bingo players.

A Grade 2 listed building, it was originally the ‘Carlton Cinema which opened in 1930, it’s first film shown being Harold Lloyds ‘Welcome Danger’. A great looking building, it has an Egyptian style frontage with an Empire styled interior, the building being designed by Architect George Coles.

As with many early cinemas there was a cafe for cinema goers, and also like many cinemas it was taken over by ABC in the mid 1930s. It was subsequently taken over as a bingo hall, and remained so for 35 years until it’s closure in 2007. It has since been purchased by a church who have plans to reopen the premises as a cinema.
