Rex Bingo Background And History
We don’t know too much about the Rex’s history prior to it’s use as a bingo hall which commenced in 1962. Having originally opened in 1938, we believe that it was a cinema, which would have gone the way that many went in the sixties due to the mass affordability of television sets.
Apparently it was closed due to economic unfeasibility, as the town only had a population of 3,500 at the time, so unless they all played bingo every night it would have been difficult to sustain the maintenance of what was apparently a very large building. Without photographs of the premises we don’t know exactly how big it was, and the building was demolished in 1991, making way for a car park.
