Mecca Bingo Background And History

Another Mecca Bingo to bite the dust, at least the premises of Smethwick Bingo won’t be demolished to make way fro flats, as the building has been listed as Grade Two. The location initially served as a skating rink, but was transformed into a cinema in 1912. It changed hands through the years, until in 1929 the building was demolished to make way for a more up to date cinema.

In 1930 the cinema opened it’s door and the first film shown was ‘Flight’, starring Jack Holt. The newer construction had an impressive frontage with large foyers with frescoed walls. Great use was made of pasterwork to further enhance the interior Moorish arches. In 1949 it changed names from the Rink Picture House to the Gaumont Theatre, of which there were many in the cinematic heyday. The first bingo take over was by Rank, and as history shows before it went the way of many Rank Bingo clubs and was taken over by Mecca until it closed in 2005.
