Gala Bingo Background And History
We don’t currently have any information on the closure of this club, but if you do have information, and would like to share it with us, please contact us here.
We do know that the club was originally the Queens Theatre, which opened in 1887. The Theatre was rebuilt and reopened after it had been destroyed by a fire only seven years after opening. With seating capacity of 1350, the venue played host to variety as well an undertook a change of name to the ‘Empire’.
Taken over in 1925 by ABC cinemas during their nationwide takeover mission, the cinema was to last until 1966, the last film shown being ‘Harem Holiday’ starring Elvis Presley. We are not sure exactly why the cinema closed down, but, we know that bingo won’t be returning, as a fire a year after the bingo hall’s closure was so sever that the building had to be demolished.
Date Of Club Closure: 1991
