Top Ten Bingo Background And History

Top Ten Derby started life as a theatre, and opened in 1914 with facilities for Variety, and a capacity of 2,300 which makes it one of the larger venues. It is reported to have been one of the more up market theatres although at the time, this sort of opulence was not rare. Interior decoration was sumptuous, and reflected the upmarket nature of some of it’s clientele.

The building had been taken over from Mecca Bingo by Top Ten, although we are not sure of exactly how the building came to close under it’s Top Ten ownership, although we do know that it was closed around about the same time as man y other bingo halls who were suffering from the same economic symptoms.

Since the building’s disuse there have been several disputes, and rumors arising from the apparent wish of the owner to have the building demolished much to the consternation of many theatre groups and others, especially as the building is protected.
