Mecca Bingo Background And History
The Bolton Mecca resided in one of the great Odeon Cinemas in the centre of Bolton. Prior to its modernisation in the 1960s it was a magnificent building, designed by W. Calder Robson and Harry Weedon with a striking exterior that was accentuated at night by neon lights.
Opened by Harry Croft in 1937 it was a highly successful cinema, it had a cafeteria, and it’s exterior was trimmed with coloured tiles. Unfortunately the building was demolished in 2007 which is a great loss to both bingo players, and aficionados of one of Britain’s great architectural periods.
