Closed Clubs

It’s a sad fact of life that sometimes, popular and much loved bingo clubs are forced to close. Club closing have been a fact of bingo life for decades, but the latter half of the first decade of the 21st century has been a particularly savage time for club closures, with as many as 50 – 100 clubs being forced to close as a result of a number of factors affecting the industry.

The 2007 Smoking Ban, and changes in prize payouts and the number of gaming machines clubs could have both helped to create a very uncertain future for many clubs. Due to the nature of bingo, both had a big impact on the bottom line of retail bingo clubs. As a result, this period of time saw many clubs close as they failed to maintain a profitable business model.

Typically, the types of clubs affected were the smaller ones, often the ones converted from old cinemas to bingo halls back in the 1960s. A lot of character has gone with these closures. The truth of the matter is that once closed, the likelihood of these smaller clubs reopening is pretty much non-existent. Many have already been demolished or re-purposed.

Rather than let the clubs disappear into the pages of history, the Closed Clubs section of the site will maintain a listing of these lost halls. We’ve put together information that we can find on the closure of these clubs, but we would like to see more added, and that’s where you can help us.
