Every Gala Bingo Club Up For Sale

When the reduction to the bingo tax came in earlier this year it was to proclamations that ‘bingo was saved’ but now the future of one of Britain’s biggest clubs has been thrown into doubt as Gala Coral put all 135 bingo clubs it owns up for sale. The sale of Gala hasn’t been unexpected it was thought that they would sell on the bingo offering before the company’s flotation but now they have confirmed that bankers, Lazard have been drawn in for the sale.

It’s been a tumultuous time for the bingo industry and the game has changed more in the last decade than ever before. With online gaming, mobile bingo and even television bingo, the halls have more competition but the popularity of the game is on the increase and that could mean good news for the new buyers.

Feuding Pensioners Cause Bingo Hall Police Visit

A pair of feuding pensioners, aged 90 and 92, are the reason police have had to visit a Herne Bay bingo hall twice in the last year. It’s the second time this year the couple have had a bust up at the seaside club and this time it came to physical blows.

A patrol car was sent to the Central Parade venue in Herne Bay to investigate the reports and although they left without making any arrests it’s thought they had stern words with the warring pair.

New Land Bingo Tax Comes Into Force

After huge media interest during the budget and the furore that followed the reduction of bingo taxation from 20% down to 10%, last week the promise was finally delivered as on Monday of last week the reduction in tax came into force.

George Osborne bowed to public pressure after a campaign by the Bingo Players Association. The campaign sought to reduce the tax paid by land based bingo halls to bring it in line with other forms of high street gambling. However, the Chancellor went one better than that, reducing the levy to 10%.

Bingo: Should The Game Always Play On?

We all know that bingo players are pretty serious about the game, but when disaster strikes in the bingo hall, should the game always go on? I think most of us would agree that an explosion or fire should halt the game, but when exactly should a game be stopped? In the last month there have been two stories in the news of bingo hall patrons falling ill during a game, and both times the game has continued.

There’s a saying that goes ‘It’s not life or death, it’s far more important than that.’ And while that saying is usually reserved for football, it seems that it may be more apt when discussing bingo given the nature of these two events.

MPs Still Hitting The Bingo Halls

The Bingo Tax reduction is old news now but it seems that MPs still think there are votes to be won in the bingo halls. Last week Swindon North MP Justin Tomlinson popped into Gala Bingo to call the numbers and take a look around after the recent refurbishment.

The Gala Bingo hall has undergone a major refurbishment in recent weeks and halls are still celebrating the reduction in bingo tax, and so it was the local MP who came in to celebrating the refurb and call some numbers!
